Women

Brief
Women, is my typographical depiction of women’s struggle to attain equality in the United States. I created both a book and poster to depict this struggle for women. The book was created using three separate texts, the poster uses one main text.

Approach
In the book, the main text is, The Address to the Legislature of New York, a speech by Elizabeth Cady Stanton promoting women’s rights. Alongside this text is a speech given by J. B. Sanford, titled An Argument Against Women’s Suffrage. A speech persuading men to vote against Women’s voting. I have also included Genesis Chapters 1-3. The Bible story of the worlds creation, Adam and Eve, and Women’s fatal mistake; taking
a bite from the apple.
The Bible verse provides context to the historical perspective on women and women’s rights. This text never leaves the left side of the book. Stanton’s speech runs on the right side, with call outs on certain pages emphasizing powerful quotes. Sanford’s speech is only used in call outs that accompany the Bible verse to further illustrate its meaning in the context of this book. Sanford’s and Stanton’s call outs fight for dominance throughout the book illustrating women’s struggle for equality over the course of time. The poster is just the bold typographical depiction of the speech by Stanton.
The poster emphasizes “man,” “woman” and “same and identical.” Illustrating the fact that men and women are equal.
